The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has hinted at a possible further extension of the deadline for individual income tax return filings, which is currently set to expire on 31 January.
Speaking at a press conference today (25 January), NBR Chairman Abdur Rahman Khan indicated that the board might consider more time if a significant number of registered taxpayers fail to submit their returns by the current cutoff.
“We will consider an extension if we see that a portion of those who registered for return submission are still left at the very end,” the chairman said in response to a query.
However, he clarified that a formal decision has not yet been finalised.
According to the NBR, approximately 4.7 million individuals have registered to file their returns this year. Of which, 3.4 million taxpayers have already completed their submissions.
This leaves about 1.3 million registered taxpayers who are yet to file within the remaining six days of the current month.
The original deadline for individual taxpayers had been set on 30 November. However, the revenue authority has already extended the deadline twice, adding two months to the initial timeframe to facilitate taxpayers.
The press conference was organised at the NBR headquarters in Agargaon to mark International Customs Day, which falls tomorrow.
