The National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman held a pre-budget discussion with the Newspaper Owners' Association of Bangladesh (NOAB) to consider the issue of reduction in the advance income tax (AIT) on the import of newsprint used in the newspaper industry in the upcoming budget for the fiscal year 2025-26

The Internal Resources Division (IRD) issued the order on the same day the proposed budget for the fiscal year 2025–26 was announced. IRD order stated that the revised rate would apply to newsprint imports brought in under the annual quota or entitlement jointly determined by the Information Ministry and the Commerce Ministry.

Observation

While this measure reflects partial acceptance of industry demands, the proposal for full abolition of import duty has not been implemented, and other related demands, such as VAT reduction and corporate tax relief, have not been addressed.
